genocide.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1 million Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities have allegedly been subjected to mass internment, forced sterilization and labor, torture, religious repression and other forms of cultural erasure.<\/p>\n<p>On March 21, Deng Xijun, China\u2019s ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian nations, shared a video clip from New China TV, the official YouTube Channel of China\u2019s Xinhua News Agency. The clip includes excerpts of an interview with William Jones, Washington bureau chief for the news magazine Executive Intelligence Review, in which he disputes any genocide in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<div And while Jones claims Xinjiang\u2019s Uyghur population has been growing,\u00a0<a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/population-white-paper-09302021162942.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 saw a decline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese authorities\u00a0<a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2021-06\/14\/c_1310006836.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claim<\/a>\u00a0Xinjiang\u2019s population grew 18.5 percent between 2010 and 2020. This would seem to b[e] crucial data for a state looking to convince the world that it is not preventing births in an indigenous group,\u201d he tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, the year the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) government began linking population growth to \u201creligious extremism,\u201d natural population growth decreased across all Chinese minority regions, according to Adrian Zenz, a scholar on the People\u2019s Republic of China who has reported extensively on Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/jamestown.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Zenz-Internment-Sterilizations-and-IUDs-UPDATED-July-21-Rev2.pdf?x13507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his research paper<\/a>, \u201cSterilizations, IUDs, and Mandatory Birth Control: The CCP\u2019s Campaign to Suppress Uighur Birthrates in Xinjiang,\u201d Zenz wrote that in 2010, nine of the top 10 Chinese counties with the highest natural population growth rates \u2014 as much as five times the national average \u2014 had large Uyghur or Kyrgyz populations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wsw__embed mediaReplacer externalMedia\">\n<div class=\"c-sticky-container\">\n<div id=\"sp-3\" class=\"c-sticky-element c-sticky-element--3rd-party c-sticky-element--initialised\" data-sp_api=\"youtube\" data-sp_instance_id=\"3\">\n<div class=\" external-content-rendered\"><iframe id=\"player311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pm4VIoFAyxE?&amp;&amp;&amp;fs=1&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-youtube_id=\"2\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cNatural population growth in Xinjiang has declined dramatically; growth rates fell by 84 percent in the two largest Uyghur prefectures between 2015 and 2018, and declined further in several minority regions in 2019,\u201d Zenz wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Zenz linked that population growth decline to a Chinese government campaign to cut Uyghur and other ethnic minority birth rates through measures that included pregnancy checks, forced intrauterine devices, sterilization, abortions and extrajudicial internment for birth control violations.<\/p>\n<p>According to Zenz, this proves that Beijing is carrying out a campaign of genocide under the U.N.
